Dr. Binoe E. Abuan Named UP Scientist I

The UP Diliman Department of Mechanical Engineering (UPD DME) congratulates Dr. Binoe E. Abuan on his conferment as UP Scientist I under the UP Scientific Productivity System (SPS) of the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) for 2024–2026.

Established by the UP Board of Regents in August 2005, the UP Scientific Productivity System recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated significant scientific productivity. The program aims to support the development of science and technology and to encourage and reward research and scientific work across the University.

The UP Scientist title is conferred for a three-year period under three ranks: UP Scientist I, UP Scientist II, and UP Scientist III. The system recognizes scientific productivity through research and scholarly outputs, technological contributions, and recognition within a scientist’s field.

Dr. Abuan is a Professor at the Department whose research interests include fluid dynamics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), energy systems, and turbine aerodynamics. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from UP Diliman in 2013 and his Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sheffield in 2017.

His research has covered several areas related to renewable energy and mechanical engineering. His published work includes studies on horizontal-axis tidal turbines, wind turbines, submersible pump systems, and the potential application of tidal and offshore wind energy in the Philippines. His work contributes to the continuing development of renewable and sustainable energy technologies through mechanical engineering research.

Dr. Abuan joins Dr. Louis Angelo M. Danao among DME faculty members who have received recognition under the UP Scientific Productivity System. Dr. Danao was previously named UP Scientist I for 2017–2019 and later UP Scientist III for 2020–2022, reflecting the Department’s continuing participation in the University’s scientific productivity program.
