Admission (undergraduate)

The Department of Mechanical Engineering admits a maximum of 80 qualified students per year into the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) program. Admission is competitive, quota-based, and follows the official guidelines of the University.

Applications must be complete and submitted on or before the deadline; otherwise, they will not be processed. In addition, transfer and shifting applications are accepted only during the First Semester of the academic year.

The Department is committed to upholding the University’s mission of academic excellence and accessibility, ensuring that only the most qualified and dedicated students are admitted.

Incoming First-Year Students

Admission to the BSME program as a first-year student is primarily through the UP College Admission Test (UPCAT), along with special admission programs such as the Iskolar ng Bayan and pathways for those with international qualifications. Applicants are evaluated not just on test results, but also on academic preparedness and quotas set by each UP campus and degree program.

As one of the most sought-after degree programs in the College of Engineering, entry into the BSME program is highly competitive. With only 80 slots available each year, applicants are advised to carefully consider their degree choices and to be fully informed of the requirements.

UP College Admission Test (UPCAT)

  • Admission is based on UPCAT results, ranking, campus quotas, and program cut-offs.
  • Only 80 slots are available each year for the BSME program.
  • For the latest schedule, requirements, and results, visit the UP Office of Admissions website.

Iskolar ng Bayan Program

  • For public high school graduates in the top 10 of their class under the Iskolar ng Bayan Law of 2014.
  • Applicants must still meet the minimum University Predicted Grade (UPG) and program requirements.
  • Applications must be filed at the UP campus within the same region as the applicant’s high school.
  • Inquire at UP Office of Scholarships and Grants (OSG).

International Qualifications

  • For foreign or Filipino applicants who have graduated or are graduating from a secondary school abroad.
  • Applicants must not have enrolled in college before the academic year they are applying for.
  • Admission may be granted by automatic admission provided they meet UP’s requirements, including qualifications from national or international examinations.

Shiftees

Students currently enrolled in University of the Philippines Diliman who wish to shift into the BSME program may do so by applying for internal transfer, also known as shifting. This pathway allows students who have discovered an interest in mechanical engineering to pursue the program, provided they meet the academic requirements.

Given the limited quota of 80 slots per year, shifting into BSME is not guaranteed. The College of Engineering carefully reviews applicants to ensure that students are academically prepared to handle the program.

  • Allowed after completing at least 30 academic units.
  • Minimum requirements:
  • Curriculum Weighted Average (CWA): 2.00 or better
  • Math & Science Weighted Average (MSWA): 1.75 or better
  • Must have passed Math 21 and Physics 71
  • Applicants must be able to complete the program within the prescribed residency period (no MRR extension).
  • Inquire at UPD College of Engineering – Office of the College Secretary

Transferees

Students from other UP campuses or outside institutions may apply as transferees into the BSME program. This pathway is intended for those who have demonstrated strong academic performance elsewhere and wish to pursue their studies at the University of the Philippines Diliman.

Transfer admission is highly selective. Applicants must not only meet stricter academic standards, but also complete residency requirements to ensure that their degree reflects UP Diliman’s standards of excellence.

Transfer from Other UP Constituent Universities (T1)

  • For students transferring from another University of the Philippines Campus.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 30 academic units (excluding courses cross-enrolled in UP Diliman), with:
  • CWA of 2.00 or better
  • MSWA of 1.75 or better
  • Passed Math 21 and Physics 71
  • They must also complete the BSME program within the prescribed residency limit.
  • Inquire at UP College of Engineering – Office of the College Secretary (OCS).

Transfer from Other Universities (T2)

  • For students transferring from a non-UP university.
  • At least 33 academic units completed outside UP, equivalent to UP courses.
  • GWA of 1.50 or better for all courses taken outside UP
  • MSWA of 1.25 or better
  • No failing, INC, or unremoved grades
  • They must also fall within the BSME program quota at the time of application. Transferees are on probationary status until all external courses are validated or repeated within the required period.
  • Inquire at UP Office of the University Registrar (OUR) and UP College of Engineering – Office of the College Secretary (OCS)

Deferment of Enrollment

Applicants who have been accepted into the program but cannot enroll immediately may request a deferment of enrollment. This option is available for up to one academic year, subject to the approval of the University Registrar.

This policy is designed to accommodate students who may face valid personal or logistical reasons that prevent them from starting their studies on schedule. However, during the deferment period, students must not enroll in any other college or university.
