STUDENT Organizations

Student organizations in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DME), University of the Philippines Diliman, provide opportunities for students to grow beyond the classroom. These groups foster leadership, collaboration, academic support, and a strong sense of community. Through various events and initiatives, they enrich student life and connect learners with peers, faculty, alumni, and industry partners.

UP Gears and Pinions

Founded in 1955, UP Gears and Pinions (UP GPs) is the premier home organization of BS Mechanical Engineering students in the University of the Philippines Diliman. The organization was established to foster camaraderie and unity among students while serving as a medium for academic excellence. For nearly seven decades, it has provided its members with opportunities for personal growth, leadership, and service—complementing the rigorous demands of the Mechanical Engineering program.

UP GPs organizes a wide range of flagship activities that balance technical advancement, service, and student life.

  • Machine Design Summit (MDS): An annual event that includes inter-university and inter-high school competitions, as well as seminars and workshops, to promote innovation and technical proficiency in machine design.
  • GPs Gives Back: An outreach initiative that supports chosen beneficiaries, reflecting the organization’s commitment to social responsibility and service.
  • RevUP! The Diliman Motorshow: A showcase of vehicles ranging from timeless classics to modern hybrids, bringing together students, alumni, and car enthusiasts.
  • PETIKS: A welcoming program for incoming freshmen featuring webinars, review sessions, games, and bonding activities that ease their transition into the ME community.
  • Hallowengg: A creative and festive costume party where ME students celebrate together through themed contests and friendly competitions.

Through these initiatives, UP GPs continues to embody its mission of academic support, community engagement, and holistic student development.

Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers – UP Student Unit (PSME–UPSU)

Established in 1993, the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers – UP Student Unit (PSME–UPSU) is a recognized socio-academic organization based in the College of Engineering, University of the Philippines Diliman. The organization is dedicated to promoting academic excellence, fostering service to the community, and shaping students into competent and passionate mechanical engineers who contribute to national development. Membership is open to current and former bona fide BSME students of UP Diliman seeking personal and collective growth.

PSME–UPSU’s annual flagship celebration, PSME Month, highlights its commitment to both learning and service through key events:

  • BrainMEsh: A nationwide quiz competition that challenges high school students in Mathematics and Physics and college students in Mechanical Engineering subjects.
  • National Mechanical Engineering Students’ Convergence (NMESC): A national event featuring talks and seminars by industry professionals, designed to equip students with practical insights and broaden their exposure to the profession.
  • PSME Cares: A charity initiative that channels the organization’s values into meaningful community engagement and service.

Through these activities and collaborations with other PSME student units across the country, PSME–UPSU cultivates a culture of excellence, camaraderie, and professional readiness among its members.

Mechanical Engineering Representatives (ME Reps)

The Department of Mechanical Engineering Representatives (ME Reps) serve as the official student representatives of the UP Diliman Department of Mechanical Engineering under the Engineering Student Council (ESC). They provide student services, advocate for student rights, and organize initiatives that strengthen the academic and social life of ME students.

Among their key projects are:

  • ME Days: A department-wide celebration that fosters camaraderie among students.
  • MoMEntum: The official merchandise line for ME students.
  • Linkage: Industry workshops that connect students to professional practices and career opportunities.
  • MEg-Kailangan: Income-generating projects that support organizational initiatives.
  • MEg-Aral: Academic services designed to assist students in their coursework and learning needs.

The ME Reps work closely with their counterparts in the Engineering Freshie Council—the ME Freshie Reps—who represent the Freshmen, Shiftees, and Transferees (FSTS) of the Department. The Freshie Reps focus on services and projects that ease the transition into ME student life.

Supporting these efforts is MECHANICS, the official volunteer corps of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Composed of batch representatives and specialized committees, MECHANICS helps execute events such as the ME General Assembly (MEGA) and maintains initiatives like the Honesty Store. It also provides opportunities for members to explore interests and develop skills through special-interest committees.

Through ME Reps, Freshie Reps, and MECHANICS, the department ensures that ME students are represented, supported, and actively engaged in both academic and extracurricular life.
