The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) program at the University of the Philippines Diliman provides advanced training in mechanical engineering through coursework and research. The program prepares engineers for leadership in academia, research, and industry, equipping them with the skills necessary to solve complex engineering problems.

The program is administered by the National Graduate School of Engineering (NGSE), which oversees all graduate-level admissions in the College of Engineering. Prospective students are encouraged to consult NGSE for official and up-to-date information regarding application procedures, requirements, and deadlines.

Application Procedure

  • Complete the online application form via the NGSE portal.
  • Upload all required supporting documents, including transcripts, letters of recommendation, and other necessary forms.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from a duly recognized institution.
  • Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (ME) are generally considered prepared for MSME coursework.
  • Applicants with degrees in fields other than ME will undergo a competency assessment to determine readiness for MSME courses.

Competency Assessment

Applicants’ undergraduate coursework will be reviewed to ensure they have completed or demonstrated proficiency in the following areas:

1. Mathematical Methods and Computer Programming
– Strong understanding of vector calculus, linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, and practical programming skills.
– If prerequisites are not met, students must take ME 11 – Mathematical Methods in Mechanical Engineering I.

2. Mechanics
– Understanding of kinematics, kinetics, and analysis of particles and rigid bodies in static or dynamic equilibrium.
– If prerequisites are not met, students must take ES 101 – Mechanics of Particles and Rigid Bodies.

3. Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer
– Proficiency in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer, including the laws of thermodynamics and entropy.
– If prerequisites are not met, students must take ME 61 – Fundamentals of Thermal and Fluids Engineering.

Students who do not meet the required competencies will be placed on probation and must complete prerequisite “back courses” within one academic year of acceptance. Failure to complete these courses within the specified timeframe will result in dismissal from the program.
